Overcoming Burnout in the Workplace

Workplace burnout leads to decreased productivity, employee absenteeism, and reduced employee work engagement. Burnout is a substantial barrier to achieving individual and organizational goals, and can lead to serious physical and mental health issues if left unaddressed. In addition to the impacts on workplace culture, the economic impacts of burnout on companies is substantial; it is estimated that burnout costs up to $10,000 per employee per year, across various professional sectors. 

Dr. McKinney’s talk provides foundational information about what burnout is, why it is so costly in the context of the workplace, strategies to reduce wellness inequality, and most importantly, several brain-hacks to combat burnout. Attendees will learn what burnout looks like in the workplace, including its impacts and prevalence, and how to recognize burnout in themselves and in their colleagues. Through active participation, attendees will develop a burnout management strategy that leverages these brain-hacks to boost job satisfaction, improve work-life balance, and increase productivity. Dr. McKinney integrates his proprietary gamified mental wellness app to transform this talk into an interactive workshop, and show attendees first hand how the ideas discussed in the workshop can be applied to address their own burnout levels. While this talk is geared towards employees, it can also be tailored for delivery to executives, management teams, or other stakeholders that hold a role in addressing workplace burnout and wellness. About Dr. Ty McKinney

​​Dr. Ty McKinney (he/him) received his PhD from the University of Utah in 2021 in Cognitive Neuroscience, where he specialized in understanding technology-based psychological assessment and brain-based wellness. Ty is the co-founder and owner of 8 Bit Cortex, a startup company that addresses and manages corporate workplace burnout through gamified and data-driven solutions. He also serves as the Research Director for Branch Out Neurological Foundation, a charity that funds innovative and holistic brain health research at 9 Universities across Canada, including the University of Victoria.

Dr. McKinney has over 6 years of experience facilitating corporate educational workshops on burnout, sleep, and celebrating neurodiversity with dozens of companies (including Imperial Oil, Deloitte, Critical Mass Digital Marketing Agency, DailyHive, and Suncor, among many others). He has also been a featured speaker at several events in Calgary’s innovation ecosystem (Beakerhead festival), been featured in IMPACT magazine for innovations in treating depression and boosting neuroplasticity, received numerous awards for his presentations, and been a guest speaker on various podcasts and news articles. Dr. McKinney is excited to share his expertise, experience, and tools, to support your efforts to address corporate burnout management, through his funny, interactive and data-driven talks. His current work and expertise focuses on implementing technology-based mental health assessments in the workplace, and using this data to help both individuals and companies achieve their mental wellness goals.
